Independent Music Marketing Without Selling Out

Is it true that in the world of independent music that marketing is considered a sell-out? Well, whether that is a stereotype or completely true, it does not matter because it is not a sell-out, at all! If you are an Indie musician who wants to taking an anti-corporate stance or huge labels in general leave a bad taste in your mouth you can still market in the music industry with out being left with the feeling of selling out. There are other music contacts to be made and other ways of getting your music heard with out going corporate.

The fact is, there are ways to build your fan base and amplify people’s interest your independent music – without selling out. If you are an independent music maker, here are a few ways you can do some marketing without selling out to the music industry.

First, you need to put aside your anti-marketing frame of mind and think about what is best for your career in the music industry. Finding ways to reveal your ideas and creations through your sound to more people, which in turn is essentially marketing shows that you believe in what you are creating.

Doesn’t the music you develop deserve to be heard around the world? Of course you think that way unless you only want to play for yourself. Marketing does not have to be a negative word. There are ways to market and advertise your music without “selling out” as independent music artist.

Think of your fans, they are your best promoters and marketers! Marketing isn’t all about dealing with media and big corporations. If you’re not comfortable with dealing with those people, forget about them and focus on your fan base. Have you considered provided them with ways to “spread the word.” They may already be doing just this for you. Fans probably already market for you and they will be your most passionate music contacts and promoters.

So now, you just must increase your fan base’s size and your marketing will increase. See, this is done without the use of those outlets you may despise. What is better than that? What do your fans love about your music? Once you know this, it becomes even easier to find more prospective fans that would also be interested in your music and your message.

Independent music marketing does not have to be corporate nor selling out, now does it? You are sharing what you love with those who love what you do. Use this concept to your advantage. The music industry is all about money and there is money to be made. Take a little piece of the pie without feeling like you are turning your back on your beliefs.

Music Licensing and the Existing Music Value Chain

What would you normally do if you where a producer of an advertisement and wanted to place music on your production?

If you were to answer this question in mid 90’s you would certainly think: “for great music that could boost my projects’ effectiveness, i need to hire an experienced composer to score the perfect soundtrack for my commercial”.

It was the time when the value chain in music industry in terms of TV and production music had the same beginning: Someone phones to a composer and orders a soundtrack.

A major evolution that internet and e-commerce has brought in this industry (B2B music) is the presence the Online Production Music Libraries.

Online Production Music Libraries provide producers with a simple service:

They have gathered all material that could be used in productions, have taken care of all the legal stuff that is involved in music placement in productions (Sync Licensing) and offer Real Time Online Music Licensing mechanism.

There are now many music libraries in the market but only a few play a significant role in the industry.

A new significant player in the European market,www.themusicase.com , is a place where individual composers across the globe can upload their production tracks for free , making their compositions available for licensing.

The change on the value chain is clear. Composers can now place their tracks in Music Libraries having the opportunity to place their music in productions on other countries.

The market has started accepting Music Libraries as major suppliers of music.

Key benefits such as:

-Time

-Cost

-Wide range of music styles

-Customized solutions

-Music Quality

,www.themusicase.com is an example of a high quality online music licensing mechanism, providing with music some of the biggest advertising and production companies in Europe and Usa.

Seven Music Related Jobs In UK Business

The music scene is alive and well – thriving even – in the UK. While there are thousands of artists dreaming of their big break, the music industry offers far more to the job hunter than the life of a performer. All those bands and singers and musicians need a support framework, after all. If you’re a music lover looking for music related jobs in UK companies, there’s no lack of positions open to you. Here are just ten music related jobs in UK production, broadcasting and media that are in demand.

Music Publicist

Someone has to get the word out about new music. A music publicist works with the media to be sure that artists are getting publicity to boost sales of their music and their value to a recording label.

Label Manager

A label manager works for a recording company and facilitates the releases of new music by artists recording for a particular label. In this music related job in UK recording, you’ll be working as a liaison between the various departments of the recording company to make sure that all the details are covered for a smooth release of CDs and digital singles.

Management Assistant

No matter what the industry, there’s always a need for management assistants to deal with daily administrative duties from filing invoices to setting up interviews and hotel rooms for touring artists to updating the company website. It may not sound like the most exciting music related job in UK industry, but it’s a great entry level job that will get your foot in the door. In many companies, management assistants easily move into other positions because of their experience in the music business.

Digital Research Analyst

Music companies have always employed market analysts to follow the latest trends in music and help position the company’s artists and assets to best ride the wave to success. The digital revolution rings in new changes nearly every day, and the market analyst position is giving way to a digital analyst who keeps a finger on the pulse of the market, analyzes new technology and emerging trends and forecasts the implications for the company’s products. The position requires experience and skill both in the music industry and in management.

Online Editorial Manager

In today’s digital age, an Internet presence is a total necessity for any music company. In addition to publicists, managers and PR people, there are music related jobs in UK media companies that focus on web production. From producing copy for artist profiles and stories to creating new media presentations for streaming and downloading, there are jobs for music professionals with web and digital experience.

Junior Events Producer

Live events are the heart of the music industry. From creating a schedule to ensuring that all the guests arrive on time to deciding on the invitation list so that all the right media are including, the events producer plays a key role. Junior events producers work under an events producer helping to manage aspects of the planning and execution of live events.

Intern

Internships at recording studios, radio stations and event venues are an excellent way to get to know the music industry and make valuable contacts. While the pay for an internship may be low, interns often have the chance to work on exciting projects as they learn. And in at least one recent survey, over 90% of companies who use interns say that they often hire on an intern full time when the internship period has ended.

There are many more music related jobs in UK companies, ranging from clerical work to throwing parties. If you’re looking for music related jobs in the UK, you’ll find many specialty web sites specifically for jobs in the entertainment and music business.

Bookings and Concerts and Tickets, Oh My!

Music Industry Newswire – COLUMN: Reading recent posts by music industry analysts Bob Lefsetz and Paul Resnikoff, you might think the entire concert part of the music industry has gone down the tubes. This is not to imply that the contents of the Lefsetz Letter and Digital Music News are not fair, it’s just that the comments from their thousands of readers often tend to emphasize the more eyebrow-raising situations, which is to say the horror stories of unsold seats and canceled dates.

Still, it is fascinating to go to the links provided by Lefsetz and visit the interactive seating charts for Live Nation shows. While some acts and touring events are doing well, there are some surprises involving ticket price reductions (and even some giveaways).

Let me admit right up front that the touring side of the business is not an area of expertise for me. Both of my alter ego creations at Golosio Publishing, the artists known as The G-Man and Jonny Harmonic, are studio-only entities. Two other frequent collaborators, James Sotelo and the Bella Swan Bass Society, also tend to stay in the studio, with only occasional live dates. DJ Insane regularly tours, but he’s in the EU and that’s a whole other conversation.

The only writers at Golosio who are regularly out on the road performing live are Scott Joss and Doug Colosio, the fiddle player and keyboardist for Merle Haggard’s band, The Strangers. In fact, as this is being written, they are on stage or on the way to being on stage.

Yet all the talk about the state of today’s concert business got me intrigued. So, just out of curiosity, I started poking around online to see about purchasing concert tickets for upcoming dates for Merle Haggard.

I checked four shows at three venues: Casino Rama in Toronto (2 nights), The National theater in Richmond, VA, and the MSU Riley Center in Meridian, MS. According to the online sales sites, one show had four seats left; the next had twelve seats left; the next had twenty-three seats left; and the next had six seats left. At one of the shows, the only tickets were for standing room. In other words, these shows were, for all practical purposes, sold out.

Haggard has recently released “I Am What I Am” on Vanguard Records, and reviews have been strong, especially for “I’ve Seen It Go Away,” “Pretty When It’s New,” and the one Doug, Scott and I helped co-write, “Bad Actor.” But despite the songs being compared to some of Merle’s best, and to Buck Owens’ classics (and even to Shakespeare, in the case of “Bad Actor”), country radio is ignoring the tracks.

It seems that radio has pretty much turned away from real country music, instead favoring the studio-heavy layered guitars and synths that you find in pop music. The sound of real musicians playing together on “I Am What I Am” is, for the most part, being kept off the airwaves.

Yet that real sound of real musicians is exactly what you get in concert, and so Merle is doing good business without the promotional punch of radio airplay.

Of course, like Lefsetz points out, if you make good music, target your audience and book the right-sized venues, you will do just fine on the road.
