Panda Transport Releases Plush Mechanique, Including “Transmission” As Heard On Grey’s Anatomy

Panda Transport is set to make a big splash in the US this fall, releasing “Plush Mechanique”, their latest LP with a new distribution deal with IODA. With the single “Transmission” already featured on Grey’s Anatomy, it’s just a matter of time before Panda Transport rises to prominence. After seeing success in Europe with multiple hit songs, glowing reviews and prominent placements on television, Panda Transport is pushing into the American market with “Plush Mechanique” and a new EP, “Monorail”, to be released this fall.

“Wondrous music!!!!!! They were so good, so sweet, so darn good! I’m still smiling…really.” -NME

“Plush Mechanique” defines the Panda Transport sound – a melange of electronic and natural instrumentation utilizing vocal harmonies, theremin, flute, vocoder, wooden and wired guitars, handmade percussion, synths and a trolley full of toys and light! A bit more natural sunlight than well- placed studio lighting; it is human music for human people.

Panda Transport was conceived in September of 2006 by Kathy Compton and Thierry Holweck. After meeting and becoming friends via the Information Super Highway, pen pal style, they began work in earnest to record material for the debut album, “Plush Mechanique”.

Kathy wanted to be a pussycat, a witch, or an astronaut; Thierry, alone in a boat or a shepherd in the Alps. She became a chanteuse and writer of jazz and pop; he, a punk electro-experimental musician and virtual faders master. They are polar opposites drawn together by their shared desire to explore the unknown. Their meeting was a twist of fate; their musical creation is a twist of cultures, experiences, influences and personalities.

A by-product of the global village, Panda Transport creates music where jazz phrasing, coupled with engaging melodies is set within a soundscape of harmony and fleeting sounds; astral lounge. Their passion for Voyaging remains central to their bi-continental lifestyle, most compositions being created on the road in Europe or The States, in yurts and ancient silk factories, utilizing a dilapidated laptop with its organs busting out.

Be on the lookout for Panda Transport’s new EP “Monorail” this fall, as well as upcoming tour dates in the US!

The Dark World Of BW RECKNAGEL – New Classical Composer Launches Debut Album “Nihilum”

BW Recknagel’s debut Album “Nihilum” comes like a breath of fresh air in the midst of classical releases.
Fresh, as his piano compositions are of extreme deep and dark nature. With many contemporary composers being obsessed with abstract art and, as a result, struggling to meet a wider audience, BW Recknagel has no intention to re-invent the wheel but simply focuses on making beautiful music, truly authentic and inspired.

All 10 pieces, ranging from Minimalism to dark Romanticism, have hypnotic tones of such intimacy and emotional depth that the listener is immediately drawn into a world of deep yet edgy relaxation – from the first note to the last with a commercial edge and the potential of inviting a wider audience.

Performed by Russian Pianist Xenia Russo, her sensitive and expertly colored playing brings the final magical touch to this unique work, emphasizing the “openness” of BW Recknagel’s music, painting a picture of melancholy and sadness, taking you into a journey of your own inner stories of emotion.

Tracks like “Singularity”, “Fading Love” and “Before The Dark” bear references to the early 20th Century French impressionists such as Eric Satie or Debussy whereby the Album develops into more complex, classical material in the line of dark romanticism. The mainly chord based, also longest track on the Album, “Requiem For A Friend” deserves special recognition for his incredible authentic, dark and sinister “storytelling”. The Album closes with three of the most commercial tunes, “Nihilum”, “Dusk” and “Follow Your Bliss” and again show BW Recknagel unique style and handwriting with a talent to write strong themes (leitmotivs) without leaving the classical terrain.

More surprisingly, BW Recknagel has never set a foot into a musical academy but his colorful background and musical London life and career are more than an interesting read:

Raised by a musical family, he grew up with classical music and trained in classical piano and guitar for more than 14 years. Exploring and making music from all genres has always been his passion and the rather uninspired landscape of his German hometown Dortmund led to the move to London, a leap in the dark but it was about being in the right place at the right time – his own private Hacienda.

He soon teamed up with 80′s producer Zeus B Held (Transvision Vamp, Men Without Hats, John Foxx) and became his in-house studio engineer at VoiceVersa Studio, at the heart of London’s music metropolis in Portobello Rd. For the years to come, the studio turned into one of the most vibrant places during the Brit Pop/Dance Mania era. His new collaboration with Cult Journalist Kris Needs made him remix more than 40 Top UK artists including Primal Scream, St.Etienne, Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) Malcolm MacLaren, The Prodigy – to name but a few. His own instrumental chillout work under the name Headman/Full Moon Fashions was also spotted by Billy MacKenzie of critically acclaimed The Associates fame and he staged his comeback single Loom feat. Billy MacKenzie “Anacostia Bay At The Edge Of The World”, sung over one of BW Recknagel’s original Teutonic instrumental tracks.

Still, the years 1992 to 2000 were anything but classical. BW’s life was a nonstop mixture of dance culture hedonism – think chemically influenced creativity for the 90s, detox units, rehab and production work all in the mix. In a productive haze and with the energy of five, he founded Millennium Records Ltd., (a dance imprint still active now with distribution in 20 countries) so becoming a music mogul was a natural progression. His move back to his classical roots was more accidental. “I haven’t touched or listened to classical music in 10 years and simply hearing a piece in a cab pushed a button and I haven’t looked back since.” He saw and experienced the seedy underbelly of London living for 17 years and like an avid voyeur, took in everything – these were times about being on the outside-being-in.

In the latter 5 years composing was about bringing light to the darkness – pure and intense fun for him so he never envisaged going public with his private ecstasies. Pressure from friends made him focus in 2008 and the result is the mesmerizing 2009 debut of “Nhilium”, a 10 track album of sheer emotional bliss – this man has stories to tell!

Dr. Dog Tickets – New Dr. Dog Album, ‘shame, Shame,’ Due This April

Philly’s Dr. Dog will return with their sixth album on April 6. Titled Shame, Shame, the album will be the rock band’s debut for Anti- Records. Dr. Dog bassist Toby Leaman spoke about the 11-track album with PopMatters.com, revealing that the band’s busy schedule is reflected in the album. “It’s hard when you spend half your time away from your friends and family to feel like you’re as connected as you could be to the people around you. I think that’s a lot of what this album is about,” Leaman said. The quintet will perform songs like “Stranger” and “Shame, Shame” off the album on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon the same the day album arrives.

Dr. Dog has a major gig lined up before Shame, Shame drops, however, as the band will perform at Austin, Texas’ South by South West concert. The band’s SXSW performances will take place on Friday, March 19 at Cedar Street Courtyard and Saturday, March 20 at Stubb’s Restaurant. From there, Dr. Dog’s current tour will see the band travelling to cities like Toronto, ON; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Chicago, Ill.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Aspen, Colo.; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco, Calif.; Dallas, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; Louisville, Ky.; Boston, Mass.; Philadelphia, Pa. and New York, N.Y. Get your Dr. Dog tickets from StubHub.com.

Dr. Dog’s Leaman and drummer Scott McMicken met in eighth grade and were both part of a more traditional indie rock band called Raccoon before branching off to form Dr. Dog. After recording the ambitious 35-track effort The Psychedelic Swamp as a duo, Leaman and McMicken recruited guitarist Doug O’Donnell, keyboardist Zach Miller and drummer Juston Stens to join the lineup. Dr. Dog recorded the poppier album Toothbrush in 2003, and My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James invited the band to open for MMJ on their tour in support of It Still Moves. Former Raccoon bassist Andrew Jones replaced O’Donnell, and Dr. Dog began recruiting various Philly artists to guest on tour and in the studio.

Indie label National Parking picked up 2005′s Easy Beat for distribution, and Dr. Dog supported the album on tour with My Morning Jacket and M. Ward. After making stops at SXSW and other events, Dr. Dog released the stopgap EP Takers and Leavers in September 2006, followed by We All Belong in early 2007. Throughout the remainder of 2007 Dr. Dog posted previously unreleased songs on their website and eventually the songs were released as Passed Away, Vol. 2 in March 2008. Fate followed that summer and is the predecessor to Shame, Shame.

In a recent interview with Spinner, Leaman described Dr. Dog’s writing process. “There [are] two of us that write and we pretty much write on our own. Scott will write his songs and I’ll write my songs and then when we get together to record, that’s when anybody can do whatever they want to a song. We’re pretty diplomatic, nobody is so married to their own song that they can’t hear somebody else’s opinion,” said Leaman, who also revealed that if he had to choose between recording and performing he would choose the latter—lucky for fans!

St. Lucian Reggae Artist Taj Weekes Releases Second Album, Deidem and Launches National Multi-city Summer Tour

Reggae recording artist Taj Weekes is set to shake up the musical landscape once again with his much anticipated sophomore album, DEIDEM (All of Us), set for release through Weekes’ independent label, Jatta Records this spring. Jatta Records will distribute the album nationally through the Independent Distributors Collective and Homegrown Music Network. Jatta has also secured a licensing deal with Spectra Records to release the album to major distribution chains throughout the U.S. and Canada. Overseas, Jatta will release DEIDEM in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria and Switzerland in conjunction with Afrikool/Culture Taxi Records. On the home front, DEIDEM will be released in St. Lucia late summer. In addition to international distribution, DEIDEM will be available online through iTunes, eMusic and other online music distributors.

Following on the heels of their critically acclaimed debut release, Hope & Doubt, Taj Weekes and his band, Adowa introduce audiences to DEIDEM – a classic roots reggae album filled with melodies that are deliberate and focused. Taj’s songwriting is stellar and in the words of veteran reggae music journalist Dermott Hussey of XM Satellite Radio, “raises the level of songwriting within the idiom of reggae music.” DEIDEM discusses global and humanitarian issues such as global warming, the effects of Hurricane Katrina, and the crisis in Darfur. Though the topics are insightful and serious, the grooves, melodies and rhythms are the familiar backbeats that reggae fans know and love. Tracks like “Orphans Cry,” with its lilting and classic reggae feel, depicts the suffering and isolation of lost children, making it vivid and real, no longer an abstraction on the television set or newspaper. “Since Cain,” with its Biblical reference to the first act of violence, laments the endless cycle of brutality while asking what it will take for it to end. The timely track, “Dark Clouds” warns of the cost of the degradation of the environment. The music matches the lyrics in intensity, painting an aural portrait of a world that is burning. Finding truth among the lies that we are fed by the media is the driving force behind the track, Propaganda War, and in the final track, Louisiana, Taj’s haunting falsetto accompanied by a lamenting piano encompasses the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and its equally tragic aftermath of neglect and complete indifference.

raises the level of songwriting within the idiom of reggae music.

Weekes’ commitment to humanitarian issues is further demonstrated by his work as Goodwill Ambassador to the Caribbean and as founder of his charity, They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO), which is dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged, at-risk and orphaned children around the world. All of the proceeds from the song “Orphans Cry” will be donated to TOCO to bring awareness to the issues that affect the Caribbean such as HIV/AIDS, global warming and poverty. For more information on TOCO, please visit www.theyoftencryoutreach.org.

Taj Weekes & Adowa will support the release of DEIDEM with the launch of a multi-city national tour in June which includes major festivals such as the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in California, Taos Solar Music festival in New Mexico, Musikfest in Pennsylvania and the South Bend Reggae Festival in Indiana. The band will also perform at major club venues such as Wild Hare in Chicago, Ashkenaz in Berkeley, CA and venues in Los Angeles, Seattle, Boise, St. Louis, Kansas City and New York to name a few.
