5 Things You Can Do to Change the Country and the World

The 2008 U.S. Presidential Elections are only two weeks away. Obama seems poised to win a landslide victory, but he has warned us that we cannot become complacent. The Republicans have stolen elections in the past, and they are trying to steal this one. They are disenfranchising voters all across the country, challenging registrations, practicing voter intimidation, and rigging voting machines. In addition to this there are fears that the polls are not completely accurate in their prediction of Obama’s margin – some people may say they will vote for a black man, and then refuse to do so in the privacy of the polls where they don’t have to worry about being labeled racist.

Do not think your vote is not important, doesn’t count, or isn’t necessary because Obama has a comfortable lead. Every vote is needed to make his win so big that the Republicans won’t be able to steal it or claim it was an illegitimate win. We have to get Obama into the White House, and we have to give him a clear mandate with which to govern once he’s in office.

To that end, here are some tips for how to wield power and influence in the United States of America (this is an edited, updated excerpt from The Patriot’s Spellbook by Vivienne D’Avalon):

1. Vote. Vote in every election. Don’t just wait for the Presidential election once every four years. The 2006 midterm elections were unprecedented in their importance to this country, but the House and Senate are still stacked with Bush’s Republican lapdogs, and the Constitution and our democracy are still in terrible jeopardy. We must vote as many Republicans as possible out of office and vote in Democrats who will investigate President Bush and imprison everyone in his administration that has broken the law and flouted the Constitution and our Federal Courts.

History has proven that even the smallest, seemingly insignificant elections, such as those for the local school boards, are essential. Right wing authoritarians have a track record of running for such positions in secret, deliberately hiding their affiliations, ideology and agenda in order to get elected. They then have unprecedented influence over the minds of our children, and indoctrinate them from an early age in our public schools by removing science from the curriculum and replacing it with dogma and theology.

Many people have become disillusioned with the electoral process because of the debacles of the last two Presidential elections, which Bush successfully stole, thwarting the will of the majority of the American people. I’m sure by now most of you are already familiar with the travesty that took place in the 2000 election, in which Gore won the popular vote but not the electoral vote, because the Republicans ensured that thousands of votes in key electoral college states were thrown out for one reason or another, or simply not counted.

I’m sure many of you are also familiar with the illegal activities of the 2004 election that resulted in electronic votes for Kerry being changed before the voters’ eyes into votes for Bush. Many were prevented from voting at all, because of the crime of “voting while black.” A majority of black voters are Democrats. If you are not already familiar with these crimes, please do a search on the internet for relevant reputable articles, so you can be awakened to just how bad things are. (There are several good source web sites listed in the appendix to The Patriot’s Spellbook).

However, the worst thing we can do is simply give up and refuse to vote. That kind of apathy and inaction is exactly what the criminals in our government want, because it will make it that much easier for them to continue their election fraud for years to come. “All it requires for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.”

Randi Rhodes (at the time on Air America) suggested a valuable precaution to enable voters to protect their vote and make sure it is counted, and not stolen, changed, or discarded — you do not have to wait until Election Day and vote at your polling place. You can vote early, up to two weeks before Election Day, at the office of your Supervisor of Elections and other select sites. You can get locations and a schedule from your local Supervisor of Elections. There should be a phone number for their office listed on your voter registration card. If you are not already registered, for Goddess’ sake, R-E-G-I-S-T-E-R, and make sure you do it early enough that no one can try to tie up your registration in red tape and errors to prevent you from voting! (It may already be too late for you to register, but early voting has started in some states, so if you are registered, make sure you go vote as soon as possible!)

There are three advantages to voting early: 1) you can be certain that no unscrupulous poll workers will be taking your vote home overnight, as happened in several districts in Ohio in the 2004 election; 2) you will be casting a paper ballot, not using the electronic voting machines that will be utilized in many states across the country this fall and which are easily hacked to change votes, as happened in many places in the 2004 presidential election; and 3) you will be freed on election day to work as a volunteer, helping get out the vote, drive voters to their polling place, or supervising the polls to make sure everyone who is eligible to vote is allowed to vote and not turned away on some trumped up excuse, as happened to many African American voters in the 2004 election.

2. Participate in “get out the vote” drives. Get as many unregistered voters as you can to register and vote. Volunteer on Election Day, as suggested above – just make sure you sign up to do this well in advance, because you will need to be trained.

3. Get in touch with your local Democratic Party leaders, and volunteer. There are many different capacities in which you can help to get a larger Democratic majority back into the House and Senate in the upcoming election, including manning phone banks, writing letters to the editor, volunteering for a particular candidate’s campaign, etc. Go to your local Democratic Party website for more suggestions, and for meeting and event calendars.

4. Donate money as well as time, whatever you can afford. Support a particular campaign, support your party, or support groups like People for the American Way and the ACLU that are fighting to protect our Constitutional and human rights.

5. Participate in peaceful demonstrations. Study the masters of civil disobedience — Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Go to rallies. Make yourself visible. Make sure your voice is heard. Do not let evil acts go unquestioned. Support the people fighting for your right to protest.

Each one of us is unique and has irreplaceable skills and invaluable tools to bring to bear, each fitting into the whole mosaic of action that we must create if we are going to save ourselves, our families, our country, and our planet. Trust yourself; trust your inner voice. Trust no one else in place of that.

Blessed be, and good luck to us all on Election Day!

Workplace Health and Safety Investigations

The focus of workplace injury investigations is prevention. Investigations involving on the job injuries require significant attention to detail. Investigations into these cases seek to identify the causes of work related injuries, helping employers take appropriate action to prevent future occurrences. Proper evidence collection and the information gathered during investigation interviews contribute to the success of workplace incident investigations.

Why Investigate?

According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, “reasons to investigate a workplace accident include the following”:

To find out the cause of accidents and to prevent similar accidents in the future.
To fulfill any legal requirements.
To determine the cost of an accident.
To determine compliance with applicable safety regulations.
To process workers’ compensation claims.

Here are 5 tips to consider when conducting workplace incident investigations:

1. Handle Immediate Risk

Deal with the injury immediately. If the injured employee requires basic first aid, medical assistance or hospitalization, make sure the appropriate treatment is administered. Make sure that incident reports are properly filled out and any treatment given is well documented. It’s also important to document where the accident occurred in the workplace. Block this area off until it has been investigated and deemed safe to return to. Blocking off access to the area also helps preserve evidence to be collected and reviewed by incident investigators. If there were any witnesses present when the incident happened, make a lit of their names. Witnesses are an integral part of the investigation and are interviewed to provide greater insight into the incident. If the incident needs to be reported to an occupational health and safety board or organization, make sure the claim is filed as soon as possible.

2. Evidence Collection

The Construction Safety Association of Ontario states, “work environment, job constraints, and supervisory or worker experience can all play a part in workplace injuries. These factors must be examined to determine what role each had in causing the accident.” Before anything is removed from the scene of the incident, take pictures and document observations. When collecting physical evidence, label and record the location it was found and date of collection. A case management system, such as i-Sight Investigation Software helps investigators record, track and manage case evidence. i-Sight creates exhibit numbers and bar codes for evidence, allowing each member of the investigative team to view the evidence and a brief description.

Here is a list of factors to consider during the evidence collection phase of an investigation. These questions help identify the sequence of events leading up to the accident. The list below is a fusion of the suggestions offered on the CUPE site, as well as the Chemical Plant Safety Resources Blog post titled “Industrial Accident Investigation Procedures“:

Positions and locations of injured worker(s)
Equipment, chemicals or other items used at the time of injury
Safety devices in use
Was the employee wearing proper safety gear- boots, hats, goggles.
Damage to equipment- conditions of safety devices, guards and controls
Presence of broken equipment or missing parts
Cleanliness of the workspace
Weather conditions (is the accident occurred outdoors)
Lighting levels- poor lighting, blind spots or poor lines of visibility
Noise levels
Training provided to the employee prior to operating or working in the area
Time of day
Were company procedures being followed?
3. Investigation Interviews

Interview the injured employee, supervisors and any witnesses present at the time of injury. Document the interviews either in writing, voice recording or video when permitted. These accounts allow investigators to go back and review information once the interviews are over. Interviewing the injured employee can provide investigators with a firsthand account of the accident. However, depending on how serious the injury was, witnesses could be a better source of information. For example, if the injury resulted in the victim becoming unconscious or entering a state of shock, their account of the events could lack information or become distorted due to the state they were in. Interviewing supervisors is important, as they can provide information related to the training the employee has received, dates of recent upgrades or assessments of machinery and safety procedures enabled within the workplace.

Witness interviews provide a wealth of information pertaining to the incident. Only interview those who have relevant knowledge related to the accident. Inform interviewees they are not to talk about the events or interview with their peers. When interviewing witnesses, let them know the purpose of the interview. The interviews are conducted as a way to gather additional information to take preventative measures. Interviews are not done to point blame and generate accusations. Inquire about the events leading up to the accident and what was done immediately after.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety recommends asking the following questions during witness interviews:

“Where were you at the time of the accident?
What were you doing at the time?
What did you see, hear?
What were the environmental conditions (weather, light, noise, etc.) at the time?
What was (were) the injured worker(s) doing at the time?
In your opinion, what caused the accident?
How might similar accidents be prevented in the future?”

4. Report of Findings

In some locations, companies are legally required to report the investigation findings and the actions taken to correct identified problems. Compile case evidence and interview responses for thorough analysis. i-Sight allows investigators to create reports with a single click. Data entered into the case file is pulled and placed in a report template ready for distribution. After the data has been analyzed, prepare possible solutions to the problem.

5. Corrective Action

Implement corrections immediately. Once the cause(s) of the accident have been determined, take action to correct problems and prevent future accidents. Document the correction process. Outline the steps taken and who they were tasken by. Corrective action documents provide evidence to support the corrections made after the investigation. In some countries or states, documentation of these actions is legally required. Some examples of corrective measures include:

Replacement or repairs to machinery.
Posting signs as a reminder to wear safety gear, warnings and other necessary precautions.
Training
Creation or reinforcement of safety procedures.

i-Sight is a case management software platform designed to simplify your process and provide outstanding reports. It’s primarily configured to manage customer complaints and corrective actions, or employee relations, HR & ethics investigations. It’s also used for a variety of other customized case management solutions. We blog at i-Sight.com, providing advice and tips to HR managers and investigators in regards to managing internal investigations.

Are K-mart Bottled Water Good

K-Mart bottled water is said to be great, but is it? In early 2005, John Stossel of ABC News did a special report on bottled water. Stossel and his team talked to people about why they choose bottled water over tap water. Most said, of course, they chose bottled water because they consider it safer. Some chose bottled water because it tasted better.

K-Mart bottled water entered the report when Stossel and his team ran a taste test. K-Mart bottled water, the discount brand American Fare, was pitted against New York City tap water and 4 better known, brand-name bottled waters.

Many of the people who participated regularly rejected tap water for bottled water. They were sure they could tell the difference in taste.

What Happened

1. One of the five waters was termed particularly bad by many participants. It was not New York City tap water, though. It was bottled water. In fact, it was Evian, an expensive French bottled water.

2. One of the five waters tasted was judged better than the other four. It was not the better known brands, though. It was not New York City tap water either. It was K-Mart bottled water.

These five water samples, four of them bottled water, all tested as equally healthy. When it came to taste, K-Mart bottled water beat the other four.

American Fare

K-Mart bottled water is, as mentioned above, the discount brand labeled as American Fare. That tells us little, but since it is a private label, it is difficult to find information about American Fare bottled water.

In mid-March of 2007, K-Mart expanded its American Fare line of beverages. The bottled water did so well that it is adding products such as vitamin water, bottled green iced tea, energy drinks, fruit-flavored water, and juice pouches.

If you search long enough and far enough, you will learn that American Fare bottled water is produced for K-Mart by “Famous Ramona Water, Inc.” in Ramona, California. Once you have learned this, you can inquire into the quality of American Fare bottled water.

What’s in K-Mart Bottled Water?

Famous Ramona Water, Inc. is one of 20 member companies of the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) that add fluoride to their bottled water. The practice of adding fluoride to water is good, right? It has been added to U.S. tap water for more than 60 years.

Fluoride Can Be Toxic

A growing number of reports indicate that fluoride in drinking water can be toxic, especially to children.

While proponents of fluoridation assert that there is no legitimate scientific controversy over either the benefits or safety of adding fluoridation to water, records show that there had been clear scientific controversy from the outset. There continues to be scientific controversy to this day.

Reading just a few of the many facts available on the Internet shows the honest reader that there are real dangers involved in adding fluoride to bottled water.

1. Dental fluorosis is pandemic in areas where fluoride has been added to tap water. This condition is defined as: “an abnormal condition (as mottling of the teeth) caused by fluorine or its compounds.”
2. Dental fluorosis is recognized globally by scientists to be the first clinical sign of fluoride poisoning.

3. Other countries besides those in North America have documented staggering health problems as a result of adding fluoride to drinking water.

4. Approximately twenty nations show health problems that are clearly traceable to the ingestion of fluoride such as is being added to bottled water.

5. Nearly two years ago, as of the writing of this in April 2007, 11 EPA employee unions asked for a moratorium on fluoridated drinking water. These 11 employee unions asked the EPA to recognize the cancer risks associated with adding fluoride to tap water and bottled water.

Conclusion

The teeth are said to be a mirror of what is happening to the bones of the human body. I am not a scientist, but the pictures I have seen of dental fluorosis are frightening enough to make me choose water without fluoride. The scientific facts regarding fluoride that abound on the Internet are frightening enough to make me avoid bottled water that has been fluoridated.

K-Mart bottled water may be among the least expensive, but one must question whether it is even worth the low price asked when it floods the body with fluoride, a substance that is causing growing concern.

If you care about what is in your bottled water, you may want to research the effects of fluoride.

Phlebotomy Technician Training Programs

Find Phlebotomy Technician Training in the United States and Canada. In a phlebotomy technician training course, students learn how to draw blood for transfusions, diagnosis, experiments, or for the treatment of disease. Additional phlebotomy technician training teaches students how to appropriately collect and transport laboratory specimens, and record patient data.

Students enrolled in phlebotomy technician training programs gain the skills and competence to work proficiently under stress and how to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members. In addition, phlebotomy technician training programs provide hands-on instruction in the assembly of phlebotomy equipment like needles, specimen collection instruments, and other devices.

Further studies in a phlebotomy technician training course include common duties associated with the field. For example, verification and patient identity recording processes are necessary in reassuring patient confidence; thus, phlebotomy technician training in how to label and store specimen containers for processing, administering patient interviews, and how to effectively take vital signs and blood samples for donor screening are just some of the clinical training that students gain in the course.

Phlebotomy technician training is important to future lab technicians as they become vital members of medical laboratory teams, whose main function is the collection of blood samples from patients by venipuncture or other micro techniques. Phlebotomy technicians are frequently employed in hospitals, blood banks, clinics, doctor offices, laboratories or other medical facilities.

If you are interested in becoming a phlebotomy technician, you must have a high school diploma and an education in phlebotomy. Phlebotomy technician training programs are available in most colleges, tech schools and other training facilities; and depending in which state you reside, may offer certification and/or phlebotomy technician licenses.

To learn more about becoming a phlebotomy technician, or are interested in attending a school that offers phlebotomy technician training programs, you can achieve your dream job by letting education within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, information technology, healthcare, business, and others get you started! College Packing List and Moving Guide from Student Moving Expert

We have created the definitive (well, just about) go-to guide all students should consider checking out before move-in day.

Below you will find everything from packing guidelines, to college checklist advice, to what procedures you should be aware of on your campus.

Ready to Pack?! Know the Facts.
Most every school has their on-campus housing policies online and in their student handbook.

It’s important to check this out because some schools have different policies on appliances you can bring, how you can decorate your room, and many other rules and regulations specific to your first year on campus.
It also lets you know what appliances and furniture are already provided in your room so you can better prepare for packing.

It lets you know who your resident assistants (RA’s) are so you can reach out to them with housing or roommate questions.

Know Your Neighbor
Make sure to use Facebook to search out your soon to be campus friends and roommates and find out who is living in your residence hall. Also, see if you know anyone from growing up that lives around campus and might be fun to catch up with when you arrive. Meeting and hanging out with new people on the first day is the best way to get adjusted right away and begin the school year right.

It also couldn’t hurt to call your roommate(s), introduce yourself, and get to know each other a bit so it won’t be as awkward on the first day.
When speaking with your roommate(s) plan out who is going to bring the TV, DVD player, Xbox, Wii, mini-fridge, microwave, food and drinks, etc.
Make sure to decide who’s taking which bed so there aren’t any surprises when you get to campus. Nothing worse then starting the school year off with an angry roommate.

One Last Pre-Packing Advice Tip
Getting ready to pack brings you that much closer to living on your own, but hold up first. Here are some things you should figure out with your parents before you seal the boxes and bags:

Health insurance. Most schools require that you have medical insurance. Before you arrive on campus, make sure you’re covered under your parents’ policy (verify out-of-state coverage if you’re moving out of state to go to school), or else see if you can purchase insurance through your school.

It is very important to be covered, as you will most likely get sick in the first few months of school as the fall season changes. Make copies of your insurance cards, have your home physician’s info in your phone or laptop, and find a physician in the city where you’re moving to.

Renters insurance. If you live on or off campus someone can still break into your room or a water or gas pipe can burst. Your school is most likely not liable. Look into a renter insurance policy, which can be as little as $10 a month for several thousand dollars worth of coverage.

Cell phone. If school has taken you out of state, make sure your calling plan doesn’t get you with long-distance or roaming charges. If it does, either switch to a plan with unlimited roaming and long-distance, or find a different provider. If you stay in touch by text and e-mail a lot from your phone, consider getting a plan with unlimited texting and Internet, if your current plan doesn’t already have this.

Money. Oh yeah, you are going to need this to survive. If your bank is a national chain, find a branch and at least three ATMs close to campus so you can get the cash you need right away, without having to pay crazy ATM fees (they add up). If your home bank is only local, consider getting a different bank close to campus that you can keep at least a checking account at while you’re in school.

Valuables. Label all your electronics and other valuables with your name and hometown (avoid including personal info like your driver’s license number, home address, or Social Security number that identity thieves could use). You can use a permanent marker, an engraver, or find tamper-resistant asset tags online. Store a record of all your tagged items, along with a picture, in a safe place, for insurance purposes, in case anything gets stolen.

What to Leave in the Nest
Candles and incense. Many schools don’t allow these amazing olfactory eliminators since they’re considered fire hazards. Consider bringing other forms of scent enhancers that do not require fire.

Halogen lamps. Halogens can sometimes be as dangerous as open candle flames. They emit high-level heat that, when left unattended around curtains or flammable objects, can ignite and do major damage.

Illegal stuff. Take a wild guess what we might mean here:
Drugs, alcohol, gun, knives, ninja throwing stars, and any other weapon meant to bring about injury, death, or destruction. Sounds pretty dark, but we want you and your fellow campus residents to be safe and away from potential legal trouble.

Packing Time! Situation #1
If you’ve never moved onto campus before, get ready for a comical and chaotic scene. Typically there are anywhere from 800 to 6,000 freshman and their families moving to school all on one day and all at once!

Some bring trucks, vans, caravans, and trailers. Some pack the little car to the brim, others pack the SUV to the limit and the roof.

Next they have to find a parking spot and slowly unpack the moving vehicle and walk across to the campus residence hall. There you sign paperwork out, get your keys, and possibly get a hand from a football player, welcome back crew member, or residential life staff member.

2 to 3 awkward hours later, you’ve climbed your last crowded hallway, staircase, elevator. You’ve moved your last muscle on that box or bag. And you still have not totally unpacked.

Another 2 hours go by. Finally, you’ve hung the last hanger, folded the last shirt, and organized the last desk item. Now what? Off to have fun!? Not yet.
The next phase is the trip to the campus bookstore and/or the off campus target or Wal-Mart, bed, bath, and beyond. And good thing for you and your family you are not the only ones with this idea. You spend another 1 to 2 hours getting all your books, last minute items you forgot about, and you then go back to campus, struggle to find a parking spot, and make one last trip from the vehicle to your room.

Now it is time to either have one last meal with the family or part ways and begin your new journey at college.

Here is a last minute reminder: make sure you’re fully packed the night before you leave. Double-check again in the morning to make sure you have everything. Add any last minute items that you forgot. Once you leave the nest, you want to make sure you take enough resources to survive on your own.

Packing Time! Situation # 2
We would like the student or parent reading our definitive go-to college packing list and moving guide to consider another way to start the school year off.

Instead of packing the car to the brim or renting a van, U-Haul or trailer, why not send a student’s belongings to their residence room ahead of time.
Ship2School is just one of several student moving services that will move students into any school on and before move-in day.

A student moving service will often send a fully supplied, free box kit to a student’s home. In the box kit there are usually items such as bubble wrap, tape with dispensers, a magic marker, and 5 to 10 extra strength double wall boxes.

A student packs up their belongings and schedules a pick up with the student moving service and the next time they see their belongings they are waiting for them on campus ahead of time or delivered right to their dorm room on move in day with the upgraded in room delivery feature.

If a school has an agreement with the student moving service, a student’s belongings will be waiting in their room ahead of time at no extra charge!
When weighing the emotional and financial costs of moving to college yourself or hiring someone else to do it, remember that it is not as easy as one might think.

For example, if a family has to rent a van, trailer, or U-Haul for a cross-country trip, that alone could be the same cost as using a move-in service. Even if they ride in their own car, the gas and hotels alone could equal the service. The same goes for the same family that decides to take a plane and check the student’s 5-6 bags or luggage (100 to 400 dollars).

Another example is a parent(s) that takes a day off work to move their child in, and decides to then stay the night in a hotel after the exhaustive all day move. That alone would equal the cost of sending their child’s belongings ahead of time.

One last example is a family that actually finds a cost effective way to move their child into college on move-in day. Hats off to them! They humped, schlepped, lugged each box, bag, and item from the car and into the room and did it with no help and no rental cars. And right after the move-in the parents are hitting the road and going back home. The mental, physical, and emotional energy that just happened on that last day of the family being together and the first day of the student’s new life can’t be good as a remembrance of a monumental day.

The point we are making is that moving to college is something we all have to do if we want to go to college. However, it can be done a variety of ways. We hope this go-to college moving guide helps you make a decision on what to pack, what to leave behind, and how to get prepared for school ahead of time, and how to make the best use of move-in day, whether you move yourself or have a student shipping service such as Ship2School move you to college.

Bonus: Top 10 Suggestions for “Move-In” Day:
1. Measure your room layout ahead of time. We always find a good deal of disappointed students who can’t fit their couch into their room.
2. Hang a dry erase board on the exterior of your door so that friends can leave you messages when you are not around.
3. Call your roommate prior to Move-In Day so that you can introduce yourselves and decide who is bringing the TV, DVD player, stereo, Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, food and drinks, fridge, etc.
4. Bring posters. Add your “32 Pieces” of flair to your walls.
5. Bring flip-flops or shower shoes for trips to the bathroom. You never know.
6. Don’t use nails or screws when hanging up items. You’ll pay dearly for these marks on move-out day.
7. Ask your parents to send care-packages and gift baskets to you. There’s nothing like a treat from home in the middle of the semester to boost your mid-term jitters.
8. Bring food, drinks, and snacks. You might not leave the campus ranch and make it to the grocery store right away. Stock up in advance.
9. Bring a hand-truck with wheels especially if you live on the 2nd or 3rd floor. This will greatly ease your move-in process. Of course if you use a student shipping service, you can avoid this step all together.
10. Enjoy the first day, and get to know your hall-mates. You’ll spend a lot of time in your dorm and residence hall. Be social and start the year right!

Remember; EVERYONE is THROWN in this for the first time. Don’t be shy. Say hi to everyone on the first day. It’s gonna be a fun ride!

How To Grow Your Email Opt-In List

Email opt-in lists can bring with them the best direct marketing opportunity available to man – if they are done correctly. Here are five easy ways to grow your email opt-in list whilst retaining a high number of quality of prospects.

Make Your Opt-In Form Highly Visible

Many internet marketers only place their email opt-in form on their homepage, assuming that this is the most popular page on the site. This is a mistake for two reasons – firstly, not everyone will arrive on your website’s home page (they may land on a splash page or a content page) – secondly, having only one place to opt-in is far too limiting. For these reasons, you should aim to have your opt-in available and highly visible on every page (or at least the majority of pages) of your website.

Provide Something of Value

Too many times, we see different websites offering the same cheesy, low value PLR (Public Label Rights) eBook in return for an opt-in. It’s acceptable to use a private label product as a starting block, or to give you some ideas, but its really important that you create your own product that gels with your brand as a whole. By this, I mean, at least ensure that the colour scheme and graphics match up with that of your website. Of key importance though is that you provide something original and useful. Taking a weekend off to put your own eBook together will pay huge dividends down the line. If you’re not a great writer, hire a ghost writer and provide them with the raw information.

Create Referral Incentives

Create an additional product (eBook, audio recording, etc) that your current subscribers can receive in return for referring three or five friends to your site (or opt-in page). You can either promote this offer on your site, or in your email auto-responder series, or both. Either way, make sure its appealing, useful and of high quality. Getting this trick right can equate to a ratio of about 1:1, which means that for every signup, you are assured of another signup free.

Create a Contact Us Add-on

This tactic is particularly powerful, but needs to be implemented ethically. On your contact us form, create a checkbox that reads “Also sign me up for your newsletter” or something similar. Make sure that the checkbox is not checked by default, as this will just result in angry visitors and a high unsubscribe rate.

Hold a Competition

This is possibly the oldest trick in the direct marketer’s book, but is nonetheless still incredibly effective. Hold a competition with a decent prize (possibly one of your products or services), and allow people to enter by opting in to your competition list. Provided that you market the competition well (and offer a desirable prize), you should receive quite a few opt-ins. When implementing this tactic, consider the average value per lead, and then work out a marketing budget for the competition using that figure.

More than anything else, growing your opt-in list is a long term process. Commit to the process, continually research new ways to grow the list, and have a little patience – All of these traits will pay off in the long term.

Breaking Down a Scam Letter

Fighting spam is a daunting task, ask any anti-scam website owner, and they will tell you, it’s hard work keeping up with the scam emails out there. I believe the best defense is using a spam filter program on Outlook and email server exchangers, but out in the free email account world, you need to rely on yourself to tell if that email from your “bank” is a real one or a fake.

So lets break down a recent email from a scam artist found on one of my favorite Anti-scam sites out there.

1. No matter what bank you have a account with, no bank is ever going to email you this sort of request. Never. They will have contacted you by phone or would have made contact with you via any other means other than a email. Remember that, because no matter what bank you use, you would never be asked to verify it in this way for the reasons stated.

2. Drag your mouse over the link supplied in the email, and look at the bottom of your browser, the address where you would be re-directed to doesn’t match up to the real website you should be directed to. This is also another important identification mark of the scam artist. Links they supply will typically never actually take you to the real website, unless they mess up in the formulating of the email before sending it to you, which has happened.

3. If this was a real email from your bank, they would have addressed you as Mr or Mrs Soandso, not with a generic “Valued Customer”. Most banks use software that title the email to the actual name of the account holder. This is another tell tail sign.

4. No local phone number. That is a great way to identify a scam email, simply because there is no way for them to know who is going to read this email, and where you might live. They are rolling the dice with this form of email, hoping you might actually have a account with this bank, and that you are not smart enough to know it’s a scam.
Also, if they had included a local phone number, would you be willing to call Nigeria about your bank account in the US? As they tend to use a redirect prefix of +44 before a number.

5. Grammar. This is a dead give away. 99% of the scam emails I have read over the years lack one important factor, professional language and writing. “To lift up this restriction” and “login into your account” are just two small hints out of the dozens easily seen in the letter. Do you think one of America’s largest banks is going to send out emails to their customers with more grammatical errors then a four year olds “What I did last Summer” essay?

6. Why would your bank want your SS# if you already are an account holder? Your bank would have this on file, and have no need to have you tell them for a second time.

7. The number one, most important piece of information I can point out is that if you did get this email, why would it be in your junk folder and marked as spam? Banks like this one pay a good sum of money to make sure their emails are never labeled as spam.

So there you have it, a few inside pieces of information from one of America’s biggest anti-scam experts. Take care in how you handle and read your emails, and always exercise caution!
