In the Heights made its debut on Broadway in March 2008 to rave reviews from both critics and theater-goers. Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the story revolves around three days in the Washington Heights area of New York City. It is billed as a high-energy show and is especially noted for its musical score that takes an entirely different and some would say more “hip” approach with predominantly hip-hop tunes and choreographed dance moves.
The main characters in the show include Usnavi, Nina Rosario, Abuela Claudia, Vanessa, Benny, Sonny, Daniela, Carla, Kevin Rosario, Camila Rosario, Piragua Guy and Graffiti Pete. As you settle into your seat at the Hobby Center and the curtain opens, you will suddenly be transported into a scene of ringing alarm clocks and open windows scattered throughout the backdrop of the Washington Heights neighborhood with the George Washington Bridge silhouetted in the background.
You will be treated to everyday scenes of life in the area with a young man spraying graffiti on the building walls and with store owners and residents reading papers and sipping on cups of coffee. Patrons are then introduced to the different characters, all of whom are dealing with and confronting their own personal dreams and concerns. Usnavi wants to return to the Dominican Republic, while his cousin Benny wants a promotion and Nina admits that she is struggling in college.
Audience members feel as if they are in fact living alongside the featured characters in Washington Heights, weaving in and out of the different stories. Each character confronts his or her own issues throughout the course of the show and along the way, patrons are treated to an array of uplifting songs like “Sunrise,” “In the Heights” and “When You’re Home.”
In the Heights is currently being featured in Houston, but check to see when it will also be scheduled on a stage in a venue near you. This show is perfect for people of all ages and you will fall in love with the endearing story as well as the lively and musical score that will only leave you wanting to hear more.
